Lee County woman arrested on prescription fraud charges

Drug arrests do not always involve street drugs like marijuana or cocaine. Drug charges arising out of prescription drug abuse can have consequences for the accused that are just as serious as those involving street drugs. A Lee County woman may find this out the hard way as she faces accusations that she fraudulently obtained over 10,000 oxycodone tablets over a period of 17 months.

Mandatory sentences come under criticism

About 30 years ago Congress and many state legislatures began getting tough on crime by enacting mandatory sentences for convictions on certain felony charges, including many types of drug cases. Now many researchers are saying the tough sentencing laws have gone too far, and that too many nonviolent offenders are receiving unreasonably long sentences.

Broward grand jury indicts Florida man for wife's murder

A grand jury in Broward County has indicted a 39-year-old Miramar man for the murder of his wife of 13 years. What makes this case somewhat unusual is that the woman's body has not been found. In many cases, the remains of the victim and the coroner's report are critical pieces of evidence in a murder case. Without a body, the defense can make the argument that there is reasonable doubt a murder took place. Nonetheless, the grand jury deliberated for only 23 minutes before returning an indictment on first-degree murder charges.
