Broward County couple charged with pet hospital theft

Broward County unfortunately has seen a lot of drug arrests. But one recent pair of arrests has a somewhat unusual twist: a couple were arrested and charged with stealing and selling pet medications. According to authorities, the allegedly stolen medications had a value of approximately $40,000.

The 20-year-old woman and her 25-year-old boyfriend each face six counts of grand theft and burglary. According to Wilton Manors police, the woman worked at a pet hospital in that community for approximately three years before she left the job in May. Police suspect that she made a copy of a key to the business, and used that key to enter the business after hours on six occasions to steal the pet medicines.

According to the charges, the boyfriend assisted the woman in selling the medications online through Craigslist. On two occasions, the buyer was an undercover detective for a Broward drug task force. After a month-long investigation, the couple was arrested and jailed; at the time this post was prepared they were being held on $6,500.00 bond each at the Broward County Jail.

Theft charges like this have serious consequences. A conviction could lead to prison time and a criminal record. But those who are charged with crimes like this have the right to an attorney, and it is important to keep in mind that the prosecution must prove its case beyond a reasonable doubt. With the assistance of an experienced defense lawyer, those arrested for theft or other property crimes may be able to negotiate a plea agreement to avoid prison time.
