Call to Broward deputies leads to domestic violence charges

In Florida, a domestic violence conviction can have serious consequences. Those who are charged face the possibility of a criminal record if convicted, and a damaged reputation even if they are not. A man in Miramar Beach is facing these potential consequences following a recent incident in which he was arrested on allegations of spousal abuse.

According to the Walton County Sheriff's Office, a friend of the man's wife received a text message from the wife asking the friend to call the police. The friend, a 25-year-old woman, notified Broward County deputies, who passed the information along to Walton County deputies.

Walton County deputies say they went to the couple's residence, where the man answered the door and denied any trouble. The wife, on the other hand, told the deputies that her husband had held her against her will for a two-day period. She claimed he had choked her, cutting off her air supply, and kept her quiet by holding her mouth closed. Deputies allege they saw marks on the woman's neck that could have been caused by strangulation. The man was arrested and charged with false imprisonment, aggravated assault and felony battery.

Domestic assault charges can cause serious damage to a person's career and reputation. Unfortunately, false accusations of domestic violence are sometimes made, for reasons of spite or to obtain an advantage in a divorce or family court proceeding. It is important to remember that those who are accused of domestic violence are presumed to be innocent until they are proven guilty, and have the right to an attorney to defend them in court.
