3 charged after drugs reportedly found during traffic stop

Three people were taken into custody on drug-related charges in Florida after police officers conducted a traffic stop on their vehicle for a faulty brake light. According to the report, the traffic stop took place around 11 p.m. on Aug. 5.

Officers pulled over the SUV, which was occupied by four people, in Milton. After the driver's records were checked, police reportedly took the driver, a 37-year-old man, into custody for operating a vehicle with a suspended license. One of the passengers, a 36-year-old man, reportedly pulled a case out of his pocket that contained cash, prescription pills and a baggie of cocaine after the officers requested that he turn out his pockets. Additionally, the officers seized needles, methamphetamine and other drug-related paraphernalia from a 35-year-old female passenger's purse after a K-9 informed authorities of the potential presence of drugs.

The male passenger was charged with possession of cocaine, possession of a controlled substance without a prescription and possession of drug paraphernalia. The female passenger was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a controlled substance and possession of marijuana under 20 grams. The driver was charged with driving while his license was suspended or revoked. The fourth person was not charged.

Those who face drug charges may also face serious consequences that can include jail time and hefty fines. However, an attorney may be able to create a strong criminal defense based on the specific circumstances of the case. For example, if there is evidence that the authorities did not follow the proper procedures or illegally seized evidence, the attorney may be able to have the charges significantly reduced or dropped.
