Felony charges filed against Florida woman in 2 deaths

On Saturday, the family member of a 6-year-old Florida girl and her 50-year-old grandfather reported the two as missing. On Sunday, their bodies were found. The little girl's mother is now facing felony charges in connection with the death of her daughter and her father.

The last time that the man and his granddaughter were seen alive was on July 18. The girl was dropped off at her grandfather's house that day. By the time their bodies were found, they were already beginning to decompose in plastic bins in a shed on the property the victim rented.

The girl's mother allegedly killed the two and then callously sat down to watch an episode of "Criminal Minds," which is a television crime drama. Supposedly, the show gave her the idea for how to dispose of the bodies. The Polk County sheriff told reporters that the woman killed her daughter because she "didn't like her," and she was afraid that being a mother would cause problems in her relationship with her boyfriend. He also commented that investigators were still attempting to ascertain why she would have wanted to kill her father.

The woman faces two felony charges of murder in the first degree and one charge of tampering with evidence. Regardless of the fact that the sheriff seemed convinced of her guilt, the woman is entitled to be presumed innocent until and unless Florida prosecutors prove it to the court beyond a reasonable doubt. That means that she is entitled to a fair trial, to confront the witnesses against her and to present a defense to the charges against her.
