Florida couple charged with drug crimes

Drug abuse seems to be epidemic in our country, and police in Florida exert a great deal of effort trying to contain the sale and distribution of illegal drugs. With this effort may come a certain amount of pressure to make a difference, and officers must be especially vigilant to protect the rights of those suspected of drug crimes. The search of a residence, for example, involves a court-issued warrant and must follow very particular guidelines.

Police had been investigating possible drug activity at a certain residence in Florida. Acting on a search warrant, they entered the home and arrested the man and woman inside. Further search of the home revealed a handgun, surveillance equipment, drug paraphernalia, and some cash. The man also was allegedly carrying 15 small bags of heroin which police charged him with intending to sell.

Because the man was apparently a convicted felon, possessing the gun added another serious charge. Both the man and the woman were charged with owning or renting a building that is knowingly used to sell drugs, and possessing drug equipment. The woman was held on $5,500 bond, but the man's bond was over $200,000.

When dealing with drug crimes, some in society may approve of the courts taking an aggressive stand. However, everyone charged with a crime has rights, even if they have previously been convicted of a felony. Those in Florida who are facing serious drug charges often contact an experienced criminal attorney who will make sure their rights are protected and their defense is strong.
