Shoplifting is a family affair for one Florida mom

On a recent Tuesday morning, a mother and her four children allegedly left a Florida Walmart with a cart full of stolen merchandise. They are now facing shoplifting charges. Surveillance footage shows the family, along with two other females, loading items from a cart into the trunk of a car. Meanwhile, a loss prevention employee alerted a police officer who was parked in front of the store, and the officer approached the vehicle.

One of the sons apparently shouted for his mother to leave quickly, and the car nearly hit the officer as it backed into the half full shopping cart and sped off . The woman raced from the parking lot and spilled items from the open trunk s she did, including an air conditioner which the family had allegedly taken from the store. The officer radioed a description of the car and tag number, and police arrested the family about a mile away in the parking lot of another store.

Of the seven people crowded into the car, the mother and her three older children, ages 17 to 20, were charged with felony theft. The other two females--who were apparently girlfriends of the sons--and the minor son were not charged, but the mother was additionally charged with contributing to the delinquency of the minor son. The family is accused of shoplifting $783 worth of merchandise, including a push mower, a vehicle battery, shampoo, clothing and other items.

Even when the evidence seems to be clearly against a defendant, it is critical that his or her rights are protected. Shoplifting is a serious charge, and most businesses seem to prosecute to the fullest extent of the law. Many in Florida who face allegations of shoplifting contact a lawyer as quickly as possible. Having an attorney at one's side to navigate the criminal process improves a person's chances of achieving the best possible outcome.
