Florida theft reduction credited to new product

There's a new crime fighter in Florida. Recently, dozens of law enforcement agencies across the state have added a new product called SmartWater CSI to their crime fighting kits. While proponents of this new technology say it has reduced the number of theft and property crimes, critics note that the water has netted only a few arrests.

While the product has been used in Europe for over 20 years, it only arrived in America in 2013. The water cannot be seen by the naked eye, but it glows when hit with ultraviolet light. From a law enforcement perspective, the appealing thing about SmartWater CSI is that if it is sprayed on intruders, it stains their skin for weeks. When sprinkled on property, it leaves its invisible mark for several years.

The purpose of using it on property is so that the property can be returned to the owner once it is recovered. However, reportedly no property in Florida has been reunited with its owners so far. Despite this, residents seem to be impressed with the product's ability to deter crime. Posting notices that SmartWater CSI is in use on the property has supposedly caused a 70 to 80 percent drop in thefts in some areas.

If a person is arrested and found to have residue from SmartWater CSI on his or her skin, it may seem like an open and closed case. This is not always true. In fact, in Florida there have been very few convictions in cases where SmartWater CSI was used. Having an experienced defense attorney may make the difference if one is arrested based on this product's stains. Anyone facing charges for theft is wise to contact a criminal defense attorney to make sure his or her rights are protected.
