When do the police need a search warrant?

Fourth Amendment rights under the U.S. Constitution are twofold. First, it protects your right to privacy at home. It also protects you from unreasonable and arbitrary governmental intrusions. It provides that the "[t]he right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but on probable cause supported by oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized."

Report finds coercion, rights violations in drug cases

Florida is one of four states that the American Civil Liberties Union focused on in a report that found people serving long sentences for possessing only small amounts of a drug. According to the ACLU, a significant amount of time and resources are put toward detaining and imprisoning people for low-level drug use. In 2015, almost half the arrests were for marijuana use. Louisiana, Texas and New York were the other states the report focused on, but the problem is in many states.

What happens when a minor breaks the law

When a child under the age of 18 violates the law in Florida, the juvenile court system will usually handle their case. A minor may be sent to a detention center immediately after being taken into custody by a police officer, or the minor may be released to their parents. In some cases, juveniles are placed on home detention.
