18-year-old facing drug and weapons charges

In early January, an 18-year-old Florida man was taken into police custody on numerous drug and weapon charges. He was charged with possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, carrying a concealed weapon and carrying fraudulent identification.

The man, a college student, was stopped by Florida Atlantic University police while he was driving. They noted that the vehicle had an odor of marijuana. He failed to provide his driver's license and his vehicle registration. When the authorities searched the vehicle, they found a plastic bag that allegedly had marijuana resident. They also recovered a scale, a broken bong and a handgun. Authorities also recovered approximately $400 in cash.

It appeared that the man had made the $400 in about three hours of selling the marijuana. When questioned, the man stated that he could make about $1000 in a single day from selling marijuana to other students. He also stated that he carried the handgun because dealing drugs is a dangerous job. He also mentioned an incident in 2016 when he was robbed at gunpoint.

Drug crimes can have serious consequences depending on the type of drug being sold and the amount they allegedly have in their possession. Because they could potentially be facing a jail sentence, it is important that a criminal law attorney look at the evidence and construct a strong defense against the charges. If the drugs were seized from a vehicle during a traffic stop, the attorney could attempt to argue that the traffic stop was not conducted with the requisite reasonable suspicion, for example.
