2 accused of stealing items worth more than $50,000

Two Florida men who were accused of stealing items valued at more than $50,000 and attempting to sell them on Craigslist were charged by the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office. The theft allegedly occurred on May 12 when someone reported that a flatbed trailer and two sump grinders had been taken from a fenced lot in Sarasota.

The victim reported to authorities that an ad was posted to Craigslist that showed the stolen items. The accused individuals got into contact with the victim and agreed to meet at a service station in south Florida to sell the items. Law enforcement officers were notified of the meetup.

The two accused individuals were taken into custody at this time. The men were identified as a 33-year-old Immokalee resident and a 32-year-old resident of Naples. Both individuals were charged with grand theft of property that valued more than $20,000. They remained in police custody while the investigation was still underway. Authorities stated that further charges associated with the incident were still pending.

Being accused of theft can have far-reaching consequences for those who are facing such charges. In addition to a jail sentence, fines and probation, the theft conviction goes on their criminal record. This can prevent them from being able to obtain gainful employment after they are released. They may also be required to make restitution for the amount that was allegedly stolen, putting them into debt and making it harder to get back on track. A criminal law attorney may protect a person against theft charges. In some cases, the attorney may argue that the person had permission from the owner to take the item or the accused person was not aware the item was stolen.
