Five arrested in Florida drug bust

On May 22, Florida authorities arrested five people on various drug and firearms charges. According to the Hendry County Sheriff's Office, deputies searched a property on Bridle Way in Labelle and uncovered 281 grams of marijuana, 7 grams of cocaine, nine Xanax pills, four rifles, two handguns and $3,500 in cash.

Five people found on the property were placed under arrest. They included a 26-year-old man, a 25-year-old woman, a 19-year-old man and two 18-year-old men.

Media reports indicate that one of the handguns was stolen from Palm Bay. Authorities are also looking into the possibility that other items found on the property could be stolen, including televisions, laptops and various electronics. All five defendants have been charged with drug possession, possession of cocaine with the intent to distribute, possession of marijuana with the intent to distribute and possession of drug paraphernalia. Three of the defendants were released on bail amounts of $50,500, $55,000 and $126,000. One defendant was held in lieu of $126,500 bail. One defendant was held on the Widman Act, which allows judges to hold a defendant on a probation violation without a warrant.

Drug crimes are often treated harshly in Florida. If convicted, defendants can be sentenced to lengthy prison terms and assessed steep fines. Once released, they could be left with permanent criminal records, which can make it difficult to find employment. However, a criminal defense attorney may be able to help a defendant obtain a better outcome. After reviewing the evidence, an attorney could work to find holes in the prosecution's case. This may lead to charges being reduced or dismissed. In some cases, a lawyer could also arrange for a defendant to attend a substance abuse program instead of going to prison.
