Major drug bust at plant nursery

A Florida plant nursery was the scene of a drug bust that resulted in charges against 21 individuals, including the property owner. Meth, cocaine and heroin were reportedly among the drugs seized during the May 1 operation in Orange City.

Police began investigating the nursery after receiving numerous complaints from local residents. Many complaints centered around people coming and going from the nursery and two residences on the property. One woman living nearby said that she called 911 a few dozen times for various reasons ranging from noise to leaving used needles on the floor.

Search warrants were executed after an undercover officer went through the gates of the property to buy meth. A rifle was seized along with numerous types of drugs, including some prescription drugs. At the time of the bust, 27 people were on the property, and 21 were charged with crimes. The youngest person charged was 29; the oldest was the 62-year-old owner of the property.

Police say they believe that some of the people charged are responsible for property crimes in West Volusia County. Multiple environmental law violations were also found during the raid by Volusia County Code Enforcement and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

Many of the people charged with drug crimes in this case were charged with possession of drug paraphernalia. In Florida, possession of drug paraphernalia is a misdemeanor, but even a misdemeanor could result in jail time if an individual is convicted. A criminal law attorney may help a client understand the charges against them and work to build a defense. It is possible that a search warrant was conducted illegally or that an individual's rights were violated during the arrest.
