Man facing drug charges allegedly claimed to be federal agent

A 31-year-old Florida man was taken into custody on May 30 on drug possession charges after allegedly claiming to be a federal agent according to a report from the Lake County Sheriff's Office. Deputies say that the man told them that he was working undercover when a records check revealed that he was driving on a revoked license. He is also said to have admitted to concealing several items on his person. Deputies assigned to the office's street crimes unit say that the man then produced $900 in cash and 31 packages of heroin.

The man has been charged with possession of heroin with the intent to distribute and is being held at the Lake County Jail. Deputies say that the heroin was packaged in a way that suggested it was available for purchase. His bond has been set at $40,000, and he is next scheduled to appear in court on June 25.

The man has crossed paths with the LCSO before. Records reveal that he has been booked into the Lake County Jail on at least 19 occasions since 2009 and has been taken into custody by the LCSO, the Florida Highway Patrol and the Clermont and Groveland police departments. The man has been charged with offenses including driving while under the influence, fleeing from police officers, shoplifting, drug possession and a raft of motor vehicle and traffic violations.

When presented with facts like these, defense attorneys may study police reports closely to determine what prompted the initial traffic stop. Police officers are not permitted to pull vehicles over for no reason, and the charges could be dismissed if the evidence suggests that officers acted without the required reasonable suspicion.
