Rapper faces jail time in Florida

Rapper Kodak Black was sentenced to 120 days in jail after he plead no contest to two misdemeanor charges in Florida on Sept. 19. The charges were for being in possession of 20 grams or less of cannabis as well as being in possession of drug paraphernalia. In addition to the jail time, he was given a one year driver's license suspension and ordered to pay court costs of $289.

As part of the sentence, he was given credit for time served since he was taken into custody back in May 2016. Although he is scheduled to be released in November 2016 on the drug charges, he faces allegations of sexual battery in South Carolina. A conviction on that charge could bring a prison sentence of up to 30 years. In that incident that took place in February 2016, he allegedly committed sexual battery in a hotel in Florence.

People who are charged with drug crimes may wish to talk to an attorney. Those who may be well known in their industry or to the public at large may suffer personal or professional harm in addition to any legal consequences that they may face. For instance, it may be possible to lose an endorsement deal after being charged or possible have a license or vehicle taken away at the scene of a traffic stop.

Criminal penalties may include jail time, a fine or a license suspension or revocation if an individual is impaired by drugs at the time of a traffic stop. An attorney may argue that an individual was not in possession of or under the influence of any controlled substance. It may also be possible to argue that an individual was in possession of a prescribed controlled substance.
