Fort Lauderdale Weapons Charge Lawyer

In Florida, a weapons charge can have very serious consequences, especially if it accompanies another criminal charge. Weapons offenses can increase the crime points assessed to determine sentencing, which may result in longer prison sentences for other violent crimes.

If you have been charged with a weapons offense, I can help. I am Andrew Coffey, a Florida board-certified criminal trial law specialist. Since 1996, I have defended thousands of people accused of violent crimes in Florida. I will fight hard to secure your freedom.

Respecting Your Right to Own a Firearm

Here in Florida, we have a long, proud tradition of responsibly exercising our Second Amendment rights to own firearms for sport and protection. Florida even has a strong self defense law that favors gun owners who are under threat of harm.

However, that often does not stop prosecutors from filing charges or police misunderstanding your rights. There are numerous weapons charges, as well as weapons enhancements, that I regularly deal with. Some of them are:

  • Carrying a concealed weapon
  • Illegal discharge of a firearm
  • Bringing a weapon to school
  • Possession of unregistered or stolen firearms

I will act quickly to determine whether you actually have proper ownership of the weapon and work with experts to determine whether the gun was fired or if there is other ballistic evidence that can be used to strengthen your case.

How the 10-20-Life Law Can Affect You

The recently enacted 10-20-Life law is a weapons enhancement law. If a weapon is used in the commission of a crime, the penalties are increased. There is a mandatory prison sentence, including an additional 10 years for possessing a firearm, 20 years for firing a firearm or 25 years to life in prison for wounding someone. You need an experienced defense lawyer if you are facing these charges.

If you used a weapon to defend yourself, we may be able to reduce or dismiss charges under the new Stand Your Ground law. This law allows you to defend yourself or others immediately if you are attacked. I will work aggressively to defend your rights.
