Former professional wrestler thwarts robbery in Florida

Although many people are aware that they could be the victim of crimes, they often rely on personal characteristics to ward off any potential assaults. Whether it be your demeanor, your size or your attitude, nearly everyone hopes to go through their day-to-day lives without major conflicts. However, even being a very large individual is no guarantee that you will not be faced with criminal acts.

Former WWE wrestler Shad Gaspard was recently the victim of an attempted robbery in the Coral Springs area. While at a convenience store, a man came up to him and demanded that Gaspard buy him a beer. When Gaspard refused, the man pulled out a gun.

Luckily for Mr. Gaspard, he is 6 feet and 7 inches tall and almost 300 pounds. Gaspard took the gun (which eventually turned out to be a BB gun) and chased down the would-be robber and then placed him in a chokehold until police arrived. The man was later charged with attempted robbery.

Robbery in Florida

While not everyone will be able to handle an attempted robbery like Shad Gaspard, everyone can know that the law has consequences for individuals who are charged with robbery in the state of Florida.

According to Florida law, robbery is defined as “the taking of money or other property which may be the subject of larceny from the person or custody of another, with intent to either permanently or temporarily deprive the person or the owner of the money or other property, when in the course of the taking there is the use of force, violence, assault, or putting in fear.”

1st and 2nd degree felony

The two main types of robbery are armed and unarmed robbery. Armed robbery is robbery that is committed with the use of a firearm or while the perpetrator is carrying a firearm. This type is legally considered to be a 1st degree felony and can result in up to 30 years in prison and/or a fine of up to $10,000. Unarmed robbery is considered a 2nd degree felony and can result in up to 15 years in prison and/or a fine of up to $10,000.

Any circumstance of robbery is a serious issue and should be treated with an appropriate amount of respect. If you have been the victim of robbery or are facing charges of robbery, it is highly suggested that you seek out the services of an experienced legal professional.
