Two arrested for dealing drugs in Florida

On Tuesday, Dec. 18, two Florida residents were arrested for alleged drug crimes in Melbourne. One of the defendants is a 15-year-old boy.

According to the Melbourne Police Department, an undercover officer spotted the teen and a 20-year-old man hanging around on the 1700 block of Southland Avenue, a location that has a reputation for drug activity. The officer claimed that both individuals smelled like marijuana and signaled for uniformed officers to come to the scene.

Responding officers approached the pair and searched them. The 15-year-old allegedly had 5 grams of cocaine stored in separate plastic baggies in his possession. He also had $230 in cash. Both he and the 20-year-old, who lives on the 1900 block of Southland, were taken into custody. The 20-year-old was charged with possession of cocaine with the intent to sell or deliver. He was previously charged with an unspecified crime in August. That case is still making its way through the court system.

Defendants charged with drug crimes can face serious consequences in Florida. If convicted, it's possible for defendants to be sentenced to years in prison and assessed thousands of dollars in fines. In addition, a permanent criminal record can limit future employment options. However, a criminal defense attorney could represent a defendant in court and work to obtain a better outcome. In some cases, the attorney may be able to successfully challenge the prosecution's evidence, which could get the charges dismissed or win an acquittal at trial. In other circumstances, the attorney may advise negotiating a plea bargain with prosecutors. This strategy could get the charges and penalties significantly reduced.
